If anybody has been checking my blog lately, you may notice I haven’t updated in a bit. Mostly because I’m not in Canada. I’ve been busy working on my baby, “The List”.
The List had been taking a break for a summer and now that school is back in, we had to get back on track. Its a bit later than I hoped for but oh well. Last year we made great strides getting our foot in the door and we were quickly becoming a common name among university students around town.

Draft for The List hand out card

This year we are facing competition from two different directions. Latenights Guelph, is a promotion company who is really active with nightlife activities. They have a lot of manpower it seems and although they are not running a site exactly like ours, they throw many events and provide photographs online. Of course this means its difficult for us, as competition to get permission to cover those events.
The next side of things is Fresh Media. They also promote events but this time we have a good relationship with them as we have covered many of their promotions. They are attempting to do something similar to Latenights, but want to share resources with us. Which may mean watering down our product. Not to mention I’ve seen them partner up with Latenights a few times, which could mean trouble.

These two companies are influential in their market and it doesn’t make sense for us to try to compete in the same way.

The Progression of the List Logo

What we decided to do instead is attack the market in a different way. Originally we were wanting to be ‘the authority of the happenings’ in Guelph, but its sorta hard to do that when you are competing with the people who set the tone! Instead we are taking a more personal approach and showing things from the perspective of a progressive Guelph resident. We are being you’re friend, giving it to you how it is, and not how we think it should be.

Anyway, all of this required a redesign of the website, focus on specific areas, and an easier way to connect with ‘the people’.

The site design is close to completion and we have already taken a few photo shoots, and videos.
